<image:title>Updates - GAR’s Lessons from 2025: Strengthening Our Organizing for the Fights Ahead - We started the year off with our Coordinating Committee Retreat in Oakland. GAR is led by our Coordinating Committee–including APEN, AYPAL, CPA, DRUM, PrYSM, and SEAC Village, all of whom are organizations who have spent over ten years building GAR. While in Oakland, we reflected on GAR’s journey and progress on our five-year strategy, measured our impact, and began charting the next chapter of our work.</image:title>

<image:title>Updates - GAR’s Lessons from 2025: Strengthening Our Organizing for the Fights Ahead - In 2024, GAR members met in Chicago to analyze the pro-authoritarian attacks on our communities. Since then, a committee of GAR members, including AAAN, ACE, APEN, DRUM, HANA Center, Lavender Phoenix, and SEAC Village, have been refining how we can wedge anti-democratic forces against each other, weakening their hold, and instead sway our communities back towards us.</image:title>
<image:caption>This work is urgent. With the Trump Administration imposing tariffs, targeting attacks on refugees and immigrants, and punishing student and youth organizers for their unwavering commitment to Palestine, we must strengthen our working-class organizing.</image:caption>

<image:title>Updates - Movement Mistakes & Lessons Learned: Organizing Small Businesses - Early efforts often faltered when conversations turned to politics too quickly. “When we talk politics to owners first before building trust,” NorCal Outreach and Organizing Coordinator Vy shared, “they often don't come back or pick up the phone call.” Many Vietnamese American salon owners hold conservative views shaped by anti-communist narratives from their refugee experiences.</image:title>
<image:caption>Organizers had not built the necessary trust or understanding with owners, leading to owners getting frustrated and distancing themselves from the Collab’s work. This would make the Collab further alienated from not only singular shops, but the Vietnamese community. This friction taught organizers a crucial lesson: politics cannot be the starting point.</image:caption>

<image:title>Updates - We’re hiring a Membership Manager/Director! - In the last three years, our membership has grown from 7 organizations to 34, across 13 states. And GAR has become increasingly clearer in our vision to grow the grassroots organizing ecosystem in working-class pan-Asian communities and to push back against the growing internal and external right-wing forces organizing our communities. Our priority is always our membership and this new addition to our team will continue to advance and build more capacity to do our work.</image:title>
<image:caption>GAR is looking for a Membership Manager or Membership Director to join our team! This new position would drive the development of a shared political vision for GAR rooted in grassroots organizing and movement building and oversee all of GAR’s programs and membership development. Our ideal candidate will have experience with grassroots organizing, have a demonstrated commitment to pushing forward an agenda that is rooted in working-class interests, and a strong understanding of the movement landscape nationally.</image:caption>

<image:title>Updates - Why I Support GAR! - My name is Julia Yang-Winkenbach, and I have been a proud donor to Grassroots Asians Rising (GAR), since 2022. But my connection to this goes beyond just financial support. It’s personal. I donate because I believe that we have a responsibility to help build the power of working-class pan-Asian communities. I’m deeply committed to creating a world where our people—our families, friends, and neighbors—can live with dignity, safety, and justice. <image:title>Updates - Let’s Build Movements Too Powerful to Ignore! - But it’s not just about numbers. Fahd, leader at our member organization Desis Rising Up and Moving (DRUM), says that “GAR provides a vital and unique political home, and a network of people that are doing similar work. Because of our shared commitment to building radical Pan-Asian power, we are able to learn from each other, support each other, consolidate our lessons, and build assessments of what we are fighting against and how to win together.”</image:title>

<image:title>Updates - Organizing Protects Us - Like you, we are reeling from Trump winning the presidential election and what this means for so many communities, including our working-class pan-Asian communities. Building resilience and grit at the grassroots is what will allow our communities to survive and defeat Trump 2.0 - and we need you to win.</image:title>

<image:title>Updates - Congratulations to our Lotus & Rice Fund Recipients - We’re excited to announce API Civic Engagement (ACE) Collaborative, SEAC Village, AYPAL, Asian Americans United (AAU), Arab American Action Network (AAAN), and Empowering Marginalized Asian Communities (EMAC) as the recipients of our Lotus & Rice Fund!</image:title>
<image:caption>Our Lotus and Rice Fund allows us to regrant $50,000 a year for three years to five GAR member organizations. We hope that this funding allows your organization to sustain your local organizing of working-class, Asian communities. We know that to effectively organize long-term people power and to defend our historic victories, we need the funding to build and sustain resilient local organizations with a ground strategy, political education, leadership development, in-language narrative influence, and direct action campaigns to improve conditions for the working class.</image:caption>

<image:title>Updates - Celebrating our 2023 National Convening - We are wary of the increasing power and influence of the small, but vocal and growing, contingent of conservatives within Asian and Asian American communities. To strategize on this, Equality Labs, Lavender Phoenix, AROC (Arab Resource and Organizing Center), and CPA (Chinese Progressive Association) shared their learnings from organizing in San Francisco and California, and what it has taken to build the decades-long movement to demand and sustain a more progressive California.</image:title>

<image:title>Updates - Celebrating our 2023 National Convening - SEAC Village and CPA gave examples of how they are building non-carceral responses to violence against and within our communities. Organizations reflected their challenges of having honest conversations with their working-class members about abolishing policing, and how leaning on their communities and building bases must be at the forefront of our work if we want safer homes, schools, and communities.</image:title>

<image:title>Updates - Celebrating our 2023 National Convening - Our climate is in crisis and Asian countries and other third-world nations will be amongst the largest groups of climate change refugees in the next several decades. <image:title>Updates - Celebrating our 2023 National Convening - Our final session, facilitated by DRUM, APEN, SEAC Village, and PWC (Pilipino Workers Center, California), grounded our hopes for the future in work that we are already doing. <image:title>Updates - Our 2023 Convening Theme: Lotus & Rice - At GAR, we are focused on building connections between grassroots organizations across the country that will advance our political agenda to empower and uplift the most marginalized and under attack in our communities. Lavender Phoenix is always bringing critical insight and perspectives with their experiences building queer and transgender Asian and Pacific Islander power to increase the visibility of Queer and Trans communities. Through organizing in the Bay Area, Lavender Phoenix trains grassroots leaders, transforms values from scarcity to abundance, and partners with organizations to sustain a vibrant movement ecosystem, and we know their work and leadership will be an inspiration to all of GAR.</image:title>

<image:title>Updates - Lessons Learned post 9/11 - Desis Rising Up and Moving (DRUM) was organizing on the ground in NYC immediately after 9/11.</image:title>
<image:caption>DRUM shared how they had to be vigilant in understanding that almost all expansions of state policing and surveillance was done in the name of “protecting” our communities, or for the “common good.” DRUM organized directly-impacted Muslim and South Asian communities to prevent self-interests from being used against each other to break solidarity. DRUM effectively held the orientation and built community bases with collective interests.</image:caption>

<image:title>Updates - Lessons Learned post 9/11 - Muslims for Just Futures stressed the pitfalls of failing to connect the role of our government and state violence in perpetuating hate violence.</image:title>
<image:caption>This disconnect happened post-9/11 and is happening currently with efforts to #StopAsianHate. Without understanding that state violence is at the root of why our communities are experiencing harm, our work can easily get co-opted by our opponents to expand violence even more.</image:caption>

<image:title>Updates - Lessons Learned post 9/11 - Arab Resource and Organizing Center (AROC) expanded on this connection, emphasizing that the attacks on working-class Muslims and Arabs are part of a much longer history of US-led wars on Black, Brown, and Indigenous people domestically and internationally.</image:title>
<image:caption>The US has long collaborated with repressive regimes, mainly the apartheid state of Israel, to share tactics, weaponry, and technologies in the violence against our communities.</image:caption>

<image:title>Updates - Lessons Learned post 9/11 - Although not an organization that organized AMEMSA communities nor existed immediately post-9/11, Red Canary Song stressed the necessity of solidarity within working-class, pan-Asian communities to protect and empower our bases that are at the most precarious of margins, including sex workers and trafficking survivors.</image:title>
<image:caption>In the aftermath of 9/11, anti-trafficking laws became severely enforced to “protect.” In actuality, these laws surveil and criminalize migrant women of color.</image:caption>

<image:title>Updates - Building Working-class Bases - Adhikaar shared how providing direct services for immediate needs to members with Temporary Protected Status opened up avenues for long-term engagement. Providence Youth Student Movement (PrYSM) stressed the necessity of meeting working-class members where they are—literally—whether that’s at schools, community gatherings, festivals, train stations, or wherever else. SEAC Village highlighted the importance of building mutual aid amongst multiracial working class bases, especially in the US South.</image:title>

<image:title>Updates - Building Working-class Bases - As we’re deep into the third year of the pandemic, we know that working-class Asian communities are at the center of many contradictions: economic and labor hardships, escalating U.S. imperialism, the rising tide for police accountability, increasing White Supremacist violence, and so much more. As a network committed to improve the quality of life, dignity, and sense of security among working-class pan-Asian communities, we know that building bases in our organizations is crucial.</image:title>
<image:caption>GAR takes base building to a national level as we connect translocal work towards a national strategy. This will shift power towards the leadership of our working-class communities. We create and unite a shared vision and strategy for material changes alongside other directly impacted communities.</image:caption>
